Work on Crewe’s ‘Pocket Parks’ continues apace

Cheshire East Council is consulting on the refurbishing of two more ‘Pocket Parks’ in Crewe.

Valley Park and Westminster Street are the latest two parks to go to public engagement. The ‘revitalisation’ of these spaces will mean significant improvements providing more accessibility for residents in these important community spaces.

McLaren Street and Derby Docks were the first Pocket Parks to be revamped in 2023 with School Crescent and Queen Street opening last summer. Works on Samuel Street and Lime Street Avenue are due to start at the end of the month.

The total investment in the four parks that have already been developed is almost £825,000, with the government’s Towns Fund providing £425,000. The total investment from the Towns Fund for the eight parks is £1.3m.

Cheshire East Council secured £400,000 additional funding from the Landfill Communities Fund via the FCC Communities Foundation - a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects.

Now it’s the turn of residents and people living near and visiting Valley Park and Westminster Street to have their say in how the pocket parks in their neighbourhood are developed. 

Councillor Michael Gorman, chair of Cheshire East Council’s economy and growth committee, said:

“It’s been fantastic to see the positive difference that these pocket parks have made to people’s lives in Crewe – they are wonderful spaces that are already being well used.

“And with four Pocket Parks already having been created, anyone that lives close to Valley Park and Westminster Street has the advantage of being able to compare and contrast and use that as an indicator of what could be achieved in their neighbourhoods. I hope that this encourages them and many other residents to engage with the consultation.”

Crewe Town Board chairman, Tony Davison, said:

“Pocket Parks are making a big difference to people’s lives and like the parks that have gone before them, the next pocket parks, which we are consulting on now, can also be truly inspirational places.”

In total, eight pocket parks in Crewe will become more attractive and better equipped spaces for people to spend time, play and enjoy physical activity enabling the improvement of public health.
