Ground investigations are due to start at Weaver Square in Northwich ahead of plans being put in place for the regeneration of the area.
These investigations will begin across the site during the week of 15th May and will inform decisions about how the site will be redeveloped.
The Council views Weaver Square as key to creating a vibrant and sustainable town centre and unlocking economic opportunities in Northwich, with plans to deliver modern and affordable town centre living being explored.
Northwich is a town with a proud salt mining heritage, which means that these site investigations are vital to learn more about the current ground conditions before any potential future building works can begin.
Buildings at Weaver Square are currently lightweight and low. There is a need to understand more about how much weight the ground will be able to sustain to inform what type of development can take place at the site. Ground conditions will influence the design of any future development, for example in the height and density of buildings.
Ground investigations will be phased to minimise disruption to residents, businesses, and visitors to the town. The works will involve two different sized boreholes being drilled into the ground at several positions across the site. Boreholes will be drilled one at a time, with the surrounding area being fenced off to ensure safety.
Investigations are expected to take around 7 weeks to complete. Findings will then be reviewed ahead of plans being developed for the area’s regeneration. All efforts will be made to minimise disruption for residents and businesses while the investigations take place, with work being completed in phases.
