Sandbach Rugby Club are delighted to be able to announce that Will Cargill will re-join the club after 6 years with Championship stalwarts; Cornish Pirates.
Amassing close to 600 points in 117 appearances for the Pirates, Will leaves the professional game to pursue his next stage of his life back in the North-West and Sandbach RUFC are delighted to welcome him as Senior Skills and Kicking Coach.
His role will also see him involved in coaching the next generation of players at Bradwall Road, namely the club’s U16, 17 & 18’s age groups, with the emphasis on transition and long-term player development. With a MSc in Sports Coaching, ‘Cargs’ will begin work with Sale Sharks in July alongside also registering for The ‘Bach as a player and we are excited to see him back in the green and red jersey in the coming months.
This has not simply been an overnight move, the club and Will have been in communication for close to 18 months, to dovetail his exit from the professional game, with a coaching role at the club alongside full-time employment at Sale Sharks. The fruition of this being a testament to the hard work behind the scenes, to make this possible.
A true Sandbachian, the fly half or full back, is a product of Sandbach School & the club’s Mini & Junior conveyor belt, Will is no stranger to Bradwall Road. Even during his time with the Pirates, he would always keep in touch with the whole club, and many will remember how influential he was when Sandbach made the leap to the National Leagues a decade ago.
It is clear the club has strong aspirations moving into the forthcoming league season and with the leagues at National 2 being reorganised and expanded at the end of the forthcoming season, Sandbach will be focusing their campaign on attaining that level, the highest in the club’s history. The new fixtures are out with Sandbach’s first league game on Saturday 4th September sees them visit Burton RFC at their brand-new state of the art facility at Battlestead Croft. Their first home game back at Bradwall Road the following week sees Doncaster Phoenix visit, so not the easiest of starts for the South Cheshire boys.
A series of warm up games during August has been arranged by Director of Rugby Andy Bird, which sees National 1 outfit Caldy visit and a trip to Manchester and Northern Premier outfit Burnage. Sandbach take on Stockport in the Cheshire Cup on Friday 27th August and will also be hopeful of going the whole way in that competition as well.
Meanwhile lots of activity has been going on in the background, with works started on a series of field shelters being constructed strategically around the club, to provide covered viewing areas and for storing clothing and equipment on those busy Sunday mornings, when the Mini & Junior section is in full flow. Meanwhile the club is also delighted that the club’s main sponsor Swanway Jaguar Crewe have extended their support of the club. The local dealership is based at their impressive centre at Crewe Green Roundabout. Further opportunities for other support however exist with a range of game, club and player sponsorship packages being available for the forthcoming season and further details can be obtained from the club’s Sponsorship Secretary Mr Chris Bennett sponsorship@sandbachrufc.co.uk
