MP Supports Boundary Commission Proposal To Keep Macclesfield Constituency Unchanged

Local MP, David Rutley, has given his strong support to the Boundary Commission’s initial proposals that would keep the Macclesfield Parliamentary constituency the same as it is today, with all the communities that are currently part of the constituency remaining in it.

The Commission’s initial proposals are set out in its recommendations for the North West Region published on 7^th June, which is part of a wider review of Parliamentary constituency boundaries for the whole of England. An ongoing eight-week consultation is currently taking place to enable members of the public to have their say on the Commission’s proposals. 

A Parliamentary constituency comprising the town of Macclesfield has been in existence for over 100 years. Macclesfield has a clear, distinct history and identity and David feels it is entirely right that the longstanding integrity of the town and its strong, historic links to neighbouring local communities are respected in the initial proposals.

David is also pleased that as part of the Commission’s initial proposals, Poynton and Disley will continue to be part of the Macclesfield constituency. Both communities have expressed a very clear desire and will to remain in a Cheshire-based Parliamentary constituency with Macclesfield over many years in previous reviews of Parliamentary constituency boundaries.

Under the Commission’s initial proposals, Bollington and Prestbury and the villages in their Cheshire East Council ward boundaries would remain in the Macclesfield constituency, as would the neighbouring communities in each of the rural Cheshire East Council wards of Gawsworth and Sutton. These local communities look to Macclesfield for local services – including Macclesfield Hospital, amenities and shopping facilities. They have transport links with Macclesfield and are also part of Macclesfield’s secondary schools’ catchment areas.

The Commission’s initial proposals for the Macclesfield constituency are entirely consistent with the Rules and key factors set out for the Commission in establishing new Parliamentary constituency boundaries. The proposed electorate of 75,881 meets the permitted electorate range. The proposals for Macclesfield also: respect the integrity of the existing constituency; acknowledge the local ties between communities; ensure that the each of the wards in the constituency are part of the same local authority: Cheshire East Council; and minimise any inconveniences to the electorate. 

Comments and submissions on the proposals relating to the Macclesfield Parliamentary constituency and other constituencies can be submitted to the Boundary Commission before this consultation stage ends on 2^nd August. The Commission will be making further recommendations after this consultation and then seeking further feedback, before it makes its final recommendations to the Government in 2023.

Commenting on his submission to the Commission, David said, “I strongly support the Boundary Commission’s initial proposals of retaining all the existing communities that are part of the Macclesfield constituency remaining within the same, single Parliamentary constituency. This approach recognises the clear views of residents in Macclesfield, Bollington, Disley, Poynton, Prestbury and surrounding communities that they wish to remain part of the same Parliamentary constituency, due to the strong historic, social and economic links between these communities, and with Cheshire.

“I hope that more local residents, local organisations and local councils will add their support to the Commission’s proposals through the consultation process before the 2^nd August deadline.

“I trust that the Commission will continue to give the most serious consideration to these points and the strong local support for maintaining the integrity of the existing Macclesfield constituency should it make any further recommendations in the North West Region and in its final recommendations to the Government, as part of its review over the months ahead.”
