A man from Hyde has been jailed for causing serious injury by dangerous driving on the M6 in Cheshire.
Michael Brook appeared at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday 21st October where he was sentenced to two years imprisonment.
The 28-year-old, of Frogmore Avenue in Hyde, had pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing.
The court heard how at around 3am on Friday 18th October 2024, Brook was driving a Volvo Car Transporter along lane one of the M6 carriageway, between junctions 18 and 19, when he collided with the rear end of a stationary Ford Fusion.
As a result, the driver of the Ford sustained a permanent, life-changing brain injury.
Brook told officers at the scene that he had "drifted off" to sleep just prior to the collision. He was subsequently charged with the offence.
Following the sentencing, Inspector Bradley Hughes said:
“When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you’re responsible for a machine easily capable of causing serious injury or even death.
“This case demonstrates the life-long repercussions of the dangers of driving whilst tired or unfit, and Brook's flippant attitude towards road safety has resulted in an innocent man sustaining life-changing injuries.
“I welcome the sentence handed to Brook and hope it serves as a stark warning to those who use our roads dangerously here in Cheshire. It also highlights the consequences of driving whilst tired or unfit.”
