This year sees the Macclesfield and Prestbury Philatelic Society celebrate its first 60 years.
To mark the occasion, the Society is staging an exhibition entitled ‘Letters from Macclesfield’.
On show will be original letters, postcards, maps, postmarks, photographs and other items telling the postal history of Macclesfield from the early 1700’s, when Nicholas Thornby was appointed the town’s first Postmaster and mail was carried to and from Macclesfield by a man on a horse.
Displays will cover the introduction of mail coach services in 1785, the advent of Penny Postage in 1840 and the development of post offices in the area up to the present day.
The exhibition will also explain the important part now played by Macclesfield in producing postage stamps issued by most countries of the world.
The exhibition, which is suitable for all ages, is to be held at The Silk Museum in Park Lane on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th March 2026 from 10 am to 4 pm.
Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.
