Bank Holiday Friday 8th May is the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) day ‘a shared moment of celebration’. Due to the current pandemic and social distancing the majority of VE Day events have been cancelled or postponed.
Congleton is keen to mark this anniversary and so on Friday 8th May there will be messages spread across social media; Town Crier Paul Bates will recite a ‘Cry for Peace’, the Town Mayor Cllr Sally Ann Holland will read a short poem and local operatic singer Carrie-Ann Williams will also be covering a song for the occasion.
Congleton Town Council is encouraging residents to join in the Nation’s Toast to the Heroes at 3pm followed by a virtual sing-a-long. Look out for details of a virtual community sing-a-long with Cllr Rob Moreton at 3.30pm – words for the songs will be on the Town Council website. It will start with the famous Dame Vera Lynn song, join online or just play the song and sing-a-long in your house or garden.
Congleton Town Mayor Cllr Sally Ann Holland said “Even though we can’t celebrate together, this monumental anniversary should not be missed. It would be a great tribute if households across Congleton could join in the celebrations from their own homes and gardens, keeping our distance but still feeling part of the great community that we have in Congleton. I, along with many, will be joining the nation’s toast at 3pm to thank those who gave so much!”
On Congleton Town Council’s website there is downloadable ‘festival packs’ to help decorate your house and garden. Send pictures and videos of your celebrations to social media using #congletoncelebratesVE20 and we will add a gallery of pictures to the Town Council website, Facebook and Instagram pages.
