Congleton Town Council is proud to announce the appointment of its new Town Crier, Vicky Pulman.
A lifelong resident of Congleton, Vicky will take on this historic civic role, which has long been a cornerstone of the town’s public life. As Town Crier, Vicky will play a vital part in supporting the Town Council by enhancing civic ceremonies, local events, and public occasions, all while preserving and promoting Congleton’s rich traditions.
Expressing her excitement for the voluntary role, Vicky said:
"I’m absolutely thrilled to be appointed as Congleton's Town Crier. "Having lived here my whole life, I’m incredibly proud of our rich history, and I’m eager to bring fresh energy to our events and celebrations. In addition to my local duties, I’m excited about the opportunity to represent Congleton in both local and national Town Crier competitions. It’s an immense privilege to take on this historic role and to help preserve this cherished tradition for future generations."
Congleton Town Mayor, Councillor Kay Wesley, expressed her excitement about Vicky's appointment:
"The role of the Town Crier is a vital link to Congleton’s past, and we are delighted to welcome Vicky as our new voice. Her deep connection to the town and her enthusiasm for its traditions make her the perfect choice. We know she will carry on the role with pride and bring her own unique energy to it."
The selection process was highly competitive, with shortlisted candidates attending an interview and performing a public cry in front of a packed crowd at the Green Fayre. The event drew enthusiastic support from the community, as visitors gathered to cheer on the contenders. A judging panel made the final decision based on the candidates' performances and interviews.
As she prepares to embark on this exciting new chapter in Congleton’s history, Vicky will have the opportunity to join the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers. Local historian and talented costume maker, Jenny Unsworth, has been commissioned to create the new outfit, ensuring that Vicky not only sounds the part but looks it too!
