Congleton Remembrance Day Parade

Congleton Town Council is hoping for the usual fantastic turnout at the Congleton Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph, Lawton Street on Sunday 12 November, as the town unites to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

The parade will form up at West Street Car Park from 10am ready to leave at 10.30am. Led by Steve Evans from the Royal British Legion, the parade will march along West Street to Swan Bank, through the pedestrian area, High Street, Market Square and Bank Street before reaching the Cenotaph at 10.50am. Children from Mossley school choir will set a poignant tone at the Cenotaph performing from 10.30am as the crowds gather.

After the two-minute silence at 11am, Revd. Ian Enticott, Rector All Saints Congleton will conduct a short service. Master of Ceremonies, Gary Dolman will call upon dignitaries and associations for the laying of wreaths. Following the service, the parade will reform and march to the back of the Town Hall via Market Square where they will be dismissed.

The town council have invited dignitaries and groups in the parade to come back to the Town Hall for refreshments.

Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Rob Moreton, said:

“Every year the event seems to get bigger, as Congleton continues to build and grow, it is really important that the strong sense of community spirit and tradition continues to flourish. It makes me extremely proud to see the show of support for Remembrance Sunday in Congleton. We are delighted to welcome back representatives from the Princess Irene Brigade who are travelling over from Holland to take part in the event.”

To allow the parade to march safely to the Cenotaph, there will be temporary 15 minute rolling road closures between 10.30am and 10.50am on West Street, Swan Bank, Mill Street, Moody Street and Market Street. Full road closures will be in place on High Street, Canal Street, Kinsey Street, Bank Street and Market Square from 10am-12.30pm. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

The event is organised by Congleton Town Council in collaboration with the Congleton Branch of the Royal British Legion. The Town Council sponsors the event, funding the road closures, sound system, band and other expenses and logistics associated with the event. The Royal British Legion forms up the parade, act as Master of Ceremonies and co-ordinates the Poppy Appeal. On 11 November, the Royal British Legion will hold a two-minute silence and a short service at the Cenotaph, Lawton Street, at 11am.

Congleton Town Hall will be illuminated with Remembrance Poppies until Monday 13 November from 4pm-11pm.
